Features of DATAQ data loggers
Features of PC-controlled data loggers
- Faster sampling rates
- Features software that enables PC-based storage and real-time display of logged data
- Powered directly from the PC or with an external power supply
Features of standalone and cloud-based data loggers
- Built-in memory of various sizes or support for removable storage devices such as SD memory cards and USB sticks
- Sometimes slower than data loggers connected to the PC
- Loggers are often battery powered or can be purchased with a battery option
- Cloud-based solutions require internet access
Data logger interfaces
PC-connected data logger
Data loggers that require a PC for data logging must be connected to it in some way. This is done via standard interfaces that can be found on all PCs. The most common are
- USB
- Ethernet
- WiFi (802.11 compatible)
Standalone and cloud-based data loggers
- Even if they work without a connected PC, standalone data loggers need to be programmed to determine how the data is recorded. The usual connection options are the same as for products with a PC connection:
- USB
- Ethernet
- WiFi (802.11 compatible)
As they require internet access, cloud-based solutions must be connected via hard-wired Ethernet or WiFi.
Data logger memory
PC-connected data logger memory
By definition, PC-connected data loggers use the memory of a PC for data storage. The software supplied or purchased with the data logger determines how the PC memory is used for data storage:
- Storage in the PC's RAM
- Streaming to the hard disk of the PC
- Virtually unlimited storage space
- Standalone and cloud-based data loggers
Storage options for standalone data loggers come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common forms are
- Built-in memory
- USB flash drive
- SD memory
